Hariom Parents,
In our recent classes, we have been exploring the Mahabharata, delving into its story and analyzing the causes and effects of key events. Today's class continued this journey with a focus on understanding the concepts of Dharma (righteousness) and Adharma (unrighteousness) through the lens of the Mahabharata and broader Hindu philosophy.
Key Highlights from Today's Class:
- Discussion on Dharma and Adharma:
- We began with an open discussion, inviting everyone to share their thoughts and associations with the terms Dharma and Adharma.
- Analyzing Characters from the Mahabharata:
- We categorized various characters from the Mahabharata as Dharmic or Adharmic and discussed the reasoning behind these classifications.
- Definition of Dharma:
- We examined the Mahabharata's perspective, particularly emphasizing ahimsa (non-violence) as a core aspect.
- Additionally, we explored our Gurudev's interpretation of Dharma as "becoming divine," reflecting on its profound implications.
- Essence and Characteristics of Dharma:
- We analyzed how everything in nature has essential characteristics defining its Dharma (e.g., sweetness in sugar, heat in fire) and distinguished these from non-essential traits like appearance or texture.
- Yoga and Spiritual Practices:
- We had a brief introduction to Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) as a physical and spiritual practice.
- We also chanted verses from the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 5: Verses 10 and 11), deepening our connection to the text.
Looking Ahead:
In upcoming classes, we aim to:
- Complete the Mahabharata story with a focus on identifying Dharmic and Adharmic actions.
- Begin exploring what Sanatana Dharma teaches and its significance in understanding Hinduism.
These foundational discussions are critical for a deeper understanding of Hindu philosophy, making each class an invaluable opportunity to learn and reflect.
Wishing you all happy holidays and a very happy new year. Given the holidays and your 8th Grader at home , Iif possible reflect or discuss the topics we have covered in the sessions this far.
Our next class is scheduled for Jan 3rd.
Regards and Hariom
Viji and Shankar.
