Kishkinda Kanda of the Ramayana story continues after 'Rama Hanuman milan'. After their introductions, Sugreeva shows Rama a bundle of jewels that were dropped by Sita and found by the vanaras. Rama and Sugreeva have made a pact to help each other. Sugriva wanted proof of Rama's strength- Rama struck one arrow through seven Sala trees and Sugriva was awestruck. He immediately went to challenge Vali. Vali's wife Tara cautioned Vali as she had heard of Rama and Sugriva's friendship. Vali however took on the challenge and he engaged in combat with Sugriva.
According to the plan, Sugreeva challenges Vali to a duel and Rama tries to shoot an arrow and kill him during the fight. However, both vanaras look alike and Rama cannot tell them apart. He cannot shoot the arrow. Abandoning the fight, Sugreeva escapes back to Rishyamukha Hill. Rama then suggests that Sugreeva wear a garland of flowers to the fight, so Rama can recognize him. The next day, Vali is challenged to a fight once again. Lord Rama hidden behind a tree aims his arrow and strikes Vali dead. Sugreeva returns to Kishkinda and claims back the throne and his wife. Vali's son Angada is crowned prince regent.
