We started with Likhita Japa, followed by opening prayers. We chanted the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam and the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram.
Mahabharata
Activity: We did a workshop on Habits and the Mahabharata.
The first step was for the children to define "habits" and give examples of what are good and bad habits. Next step was for them to discuss why its important to have good habits.
Since habits can develop consciously and subconsciously and they play an important role in the decisions we make.
The first step toward being able to control your habits is to be aware of them. So the children did an introspection of 3 Good habits they want to develop and 3 bad habits they have.
Developing awareness and then control over your habits protects you from unintended and sometimes unpredictable negative consequences.
Good habits help cultivate discipline and control over your mind and physical desires leading you closer to higher goals.
The Mahabharata connections that we made were:
Yudhisthira's dice habit - the children discussed how a harmless bad habit can quickly become a vice. We examined the consequences of Yudhistira's gambling habit.Duryodhana's greed - here the children identified need, want and greed. Materialistic vs Spiritual objects, and our attachment to them.
Dhritarashtra's blindness - here we talked about how to make speaking up in the face of injustice an habit!
The children were given a homework activity to write down one task corresponding to each habit they wrote down.
They can do that during the week to develop the good habit or eliminate the bad habit.
