Apr 27, 2025 - Grade 7 (Sunday AM)

Dear Parents,

I hope this message finds you well!

In today's class, we began exploring Kishkindha Kanda, the fourth major part of the Ramayana. We did a quick recap of Rama's journey from Ayodhya to Kishkindha, and then discussed several important topics that set the stage for this next part of the Ramayana.

Here's a quick overview of what we discussed:

  • Why does Rama meet Sugreeva?
Rama meets Sugreeva because he needs help to search for Sita. Sugreeva, in turn, needs Rama's help to reclaim his kingdom, which had been taken by his brother Vali. Their meeting at Rishyamuka Parvatam marks the beginning of a significant and loyal friendship. Interestingly, he became familiar with the world map because he spent a long time wandering in fear of Vali, traveling far and wide to stay safe.

  • Who is Vali, and what is he known for?
Vali is known for his immense strength, speed and bravery. He had defeated powerful demons and even subdued Ravana himself. Sugreeva also looked up to Vali for most of his life, impressed by his strength and leadership.

  • Why did Vali stay away from Rishyamuka Parvatam?
Vali could not approach Rishyamuka because of a curse placed upon him: if he set foot there, he would die. This allowed Sugreeva and his allies to take refuge safely in that area while planning their next steps.

  • The story behind Vali and Sugreeva's enmity:
We began discussing how a misunderstanding during a demon hunt led to a deep rift between the two brothers. Each believed the other had wronged him, leading to hurt, anger, and separation. We reflected on how misunderstandings—even among close siblings or friends—can escalate when trust breaks down.

We left the class with an open question for the children to think about:

What usually happens when there is a misunderstanding between brothers or close friends? How can it be resolved?

Next class, we will continue with how Rama helps Sugreeva and the unfolding of important events that set the stage for the next great phase of the Ramayana!

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

Regards,

Rahul and Keerthi
